Book
Type
Book Type is a classification developed for CollectorsBookMarket to help buyers find merchandise with or without
specific characteristics. When sellers assign the appropriate
Book Type value to each of their items, the system can quickly
and accurately return records from only the Book Type or Types
the buyer wants to include in their Search or Browse results.
If you have a comment or suggestion for our
book type classifications, please post them on our Forums.

Regular Trade Edition |
A
Regular Trade Edition is a
standard book in it's original binding, published to be distributed by the publisher and sold
through normal book trade channels (this includes reinforced binding
books designed for libraries, but not if they have actual library
markings, see Ex-library below). The vast majority of books
available today are Regular Trade Editions. These can be
hardbacks, trade paperbacks, mass market
paperbacks, staple bound magazines, or any other binding, however, any book that
has any type of Library or Remainder mark (see below) must be classified
as an Ex-library or Remainder. |
|
Limited Edition |
Limited Edition should be used for any book
printed in a special limited quantity print run, usually numbered and
indicating the total number of books that were printed. |
|
Ex-library |
Ex-Library
is used for any book that was formerly the property of a library or
other lending institution. Any book retired from any kind of library or that has
any library
markings, stickers, or attachments MUST be categorized as Ex-Library,
regardless if it is a hardback, paperback, periodical, or other
publication. Buckram or other library rebound books should be
classified as ex-library, even if they are free of other library
markings. |

Book Club Edition |
A Book Club Edition
or BCE is a book issued by a book club such as the Book Of The Month
Club (BOMC) or the Literary Guild, and not distributed by the trade
publisher. Usually, but not always, separately printed, often on less
expensive paper and with a lighter binding.

identifying Book Club editions,

Club Editions by Craig Stark at Bookthink is good place to start. |

Remainder |
A Remainder
is a book that contains a mark of some sort that designates it as "not
returnable" to the publisher.
Remaindered books are usually marked on the bottom (or other) book edge
with a stamp, a marker dot or slash, or
spray paint. Use this value for
any book with one of these or any similar mark whether you know if it
was an actual Remainder or not. |

ARC/Pre-Pub
use also for:
Galleys
Proofs
Review Copies
Salesman's Dummies |
Use this value for ARCs (Advance Reading Copy)
and other pre-publication items. An ARC
is a copy of a book distributed to reviewers and prospective booksellers
prior to publication. An ARC may have a different binding or cover than
the actual Trade Edition. Other pre-pub copies are:
Galley/Proof- Bound or unbound
uncorrected or hand corrected pre-publication copies,
Review Copy- A copy sent to
reviewers or prospective booksellers, designated by stamping, printing
or laid in material, and Salesman’s Dummy-
A mock-up of a book used by salesmen in the late 19th and
early 20th century to show prospective buyers what the book
would look like. It usually had a title page, 10 or 20 pages of text,
and then blank pages to fill out the rest of the binding. |

Book Arts/Handmade |
The Book Arts/Handmade book type is for
books and publications that are prized for their quality craftsmanship.
They may be handmade by book artisans, printed (typically one at a time) using
special (often vintage) printing equipment, or bound/rebound by
artisans. This classification can include Letterpress items,
Private Presses, Custom Rebound books, Handmade Paper, Book Art, and
handmade items. |
|
Periodical |
Periodicals
include any item published at regularly scheduled intervals: Magazines,
newspapers, journals, catalogs, etc. |
|
Non-book/Other |
Use the Non-book/Other value for any
non-text or non-book items such as Accessories, Ephemera, Posters,
Prints, Videos, etc. |
|
Undeclared |
Undeclared is the default value for this field. Items with this value generally
indicate a book that was bulk uploaded, but the seller didn't want to
take the time to edit their records to take advantage of our
identifier fields which aid buyers who are browsing or searching for
particular kinds of items. Buyers have the option to include or
exclude the
Undeclared value from their search or browse results. |
